The DuPage County Health Department is pleased to announce the launch of a new video series titled "Your Health Today." This new quarterly show will give county residents a behind-the-scenes look at what programs the Health Department offers.
"This is really an exciting project at the Health Department," said Maureen McHugh, Executive Director at the Health Department. "We think everyone will enjoy this video and learn more about what we do, and what services we provide, on a daily basis."
The inaugural "Your Health Today" video focuses on the Health Department's recently expanded Dental Clinic and how the five new treatment rooms will be used to meet the increasing need for oral health services among county residents.

The DuPage County Health Department is helping families in its Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program learn how to make healthy food choices at grocery stores while shopping with limited budgets.
Educational tours were provided to 35 DuPage County families through a mini grant obtained by the Health Department from the Share Our Strength Foundation. The purpose of the grant was to teach families how to make real changes in their food shopping habits that will benefit both their health and their wallets.
The United States Department of Agriculture recently has changed some of its food packaging and has been encouraging the consumption of more fresh fruits and vegetables, but WIC participants said they were not confident they could purchase these foods correctly.
The recent program at the Health Department was called "Shopping Matters" and it included a supermarket tour and vouchers for fresh fruit and vegetable purchases utilizing the skills that WIC clients learned on the supermarket tour.
In a survey after the tour, nearly 100 percent of the participants said they were more confident they would be able to make the most of their fruit and vegetable vouchers and identify WIC foods at the grocery store.
Research has shown that careful food shopping practices, such as price comparisons and nutrition label usage, can lead to better family eating practices.
Student athletes can now enjoy enhanced sports physicals that will give them a taste of what it's like to be an elite athlete. The community program will be held on Monday, May 21st, from 3pm to 7pm at National University of Health Sciences in Lombard.
Families can make an appointment for their child to receive a sports physical examination from Sean Rardin, MD, for only $30 that will clear them to play school sports. In addition, each young athlete will receive a chiropractic sports performance evaluation as well as an individualized training plan to improve their sports performance. The student will also receive a naturopathic nutrition assessment and receive a personal nutrition plan for improved athletic performance.
"In addition to making a sports physical as affordable as possible for a wide number of community residents, our sports physical program will give young athletes an experience similar to what an elite college or professional athlete receives," says Dr. David Parish, dean of clinics for National University.
Many clinicians, interns and faculty at the NUHS Whole Health Center in Lombard have extensive training in sports medicine and sports nutrition, and have served as physicians for college, Olympic and professional sports teams. "The program will offer young athletes tools to help them reach their personal best in an effective, natural and healthy way, and hopefully reinforce health strategies they can maintain for life," says Dr. Parish.
To make an appointment for a sports physical at the May 21st event, call 630-629-9664. The NUHS Whole Health Center in Lombard is located at 200 E. Roosevelt Rd., Bldg. B, at the intersection of Roosevelt Rd. and Highland Ave. in Lombard.
